Lil Durk’s Protégé, King Von: Here to Stay?

We all know Lil Durk, one of the fathers of drill rap in Chicago and the boss of the whole OTF (Only The Family) crew, but what do you know about King Von? Von is Durk’s longtime childhood friend; the two grew up on 64th Street in Chicago and grew up bouncing from house to house. Lil Durk really rose to mainstream fame after his 2015 project, Remember My Name. Everybody definitely remembered his name after the album peaked at #15 on the Billboard charts and earned Durk his first platinum plaque. Since then, Durk has not hidden from the music scene one bit. We’ve gotten a series of projects, from the Signed to the Streets series, to Just Cause Y’all Waited, we’ve seen plenty of Durk as far as music goes. Now, he has multiple platinum plaques, an endorsement from Air Jordan, and a spokesperson for Cole Bennett’s popular music video company Lyrical Lemonade. With all that being said, where’s that leave Von?

At age 19, King Von sat in the Cook County Jail awaiting a murder trial. The case was so scattered that he sat for almost four years awaiting trial. Over these four years, he decided to start writing down his raps, especially since his longtime friend Lil Durk had been blowing up in the streets while Von was incarcerated. He’d call Durk every chance he got to show him his raps and how he was progressing. Von had to remain optimistic, because if convicted he’d be going away for life, which completely erases the possibility of a rap career. After almost four years of investigation, there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that Von had anything to do with the case and he was released with all charges dropped in 2018. Coming home was obviously something he thought might never happen, so he wasted no time. The first day back, Von came home, saw his family, then called Durk and went right to the studio. From there on, he started to blow up.

The Atlanta Shooting Case: What Happened?

For all my diehard OTF fans out there (me being one of them), we all remember hearing about what happened this summer in Atlanta. The picture above shows the two rappers in court at their first appearance for a shooting that happened in Atlanta after a show they were performing at. A 23-year-old Atlanta native was shot in the chest but lived and was said to be in stable condition after being taken to the hospital. A surveillance camera was said to have caught footage of Lil Durk with his hand out of the window, holding and firing a gun at the victim. It is said that the camera caught Von inside the car, too. This didn’t sound like good news, but the two kept their composure and didn’t say a word in court and let the lawyers handle everything. In August, the two were released on a $250K bond, each. They immediately posted bond and went right to social media to tell their fans that they were innocent and that the charges were not valid. The two still remain out on bail while the investigation is ongoing. This has affected their careers a little bit, especially Durk, when he lost out on a show in the Bahamas. Based on some sources, it seems like the two might get off with no charges as the evidence is not very clear and the victim does not recall who pulled the trigger, or even what they looked like. I guess we’ll have to wait and see where this one goes.

King Von’s Top 5 Songs

../../Desktop/download.jpg

King Von never let the media or court cases influence his work ethic and driving his career forward. Over the past year, Von has made a crazy big name for himself in the Chicago drill rap scene, now having almost 900K Instagram followers and a gold plaque for his track, Crazy Story. With that being said, what are his top 5 most popular songs?

  1. Crazy Story, Grandson, Vol. 1
  2. 2 A.M., Single
  3. Rollin’, Ft. YNW Melly, Single
  4. No Flaws, Grandson, Vol. 1
  5. What It’s Like, Single

Based on streams and views, these are the top 5 songs that have gotten King Von to this point in his career. Collectively, just these 5 songs alone have over 40 million views on YouTube, as well as millions of streams across every platform. Going back to my original point, I think it’s clear that Von is here to stay. When you come into the rap game for only a year and you can do these kinds of numbers, it says something about you and where you’re going, and I think it’s safe to say that King Von is only going to get even bigger in 2020. Let me know what you guys think. Do you like King Von’s music? Is he here to stay? Leave me some comments.
